Huddie William Ledbetter was nothing less than a master wordsmith, storyteller, songwriter, singer and poet, was a beautiful song when I little kid living in the hills of Connemara I would hear this song on the radio, in my mind I guess that is was a local folk song, it is that type of song that would sound brilliant and real in every little village, all over this world, in any part of Gods green earth, this helps to show the total brilliance of this mighty man Ledbetter. Listen to Ry Codder & Rory Gallagher sing this mans songs, they both do the greatest justice to his tunes

This song got him out of Angola ,Louisiana State prison.

just demonstrates that black people did country music too. Somewhere along the line, country became a white thing. Probably to do with the racism implicit in the music industry, with black artists having to play up to racial stereotypes to get record contracts.
